Each year, HSI's ProtectSeals team bears witness to the brutality of the Canadian commercial seal hunt—the largest slaughter of marine mammals on Earth—so that they can share images of this atrocity with the rest of the world in the hopes of convincing the Canadian government and sealing industry to end the killing.
We are active on this issue on many fronts—from our boycott of Canadian seafood with its thousands of participating individuals, restaurants, chefs and businesses, to our campaigns to get seal product trade banned in countries around the world, including our success with the European Union in 2009. Demand for seal fur and other products is decreasing, markets are closing and we are calling for a buyout of sealing licenses by the Canadian government as way to put a final end to this needless suffering.
Still, our fight continues. The Canadian government has been looking to China as a new place to sell its bloody wares and has brought a challenge to the EU seal product trade ban to the World Trade Organization. Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans keeps kill quotas high despite a decline in birth rates due to melting ice from climate change.
We need you to stand with us until the battle is won and the seals can live in peace. Please watch ourseals news pageand join ourFacebook seals causeto stay informed about what we’re doing, and how you can help.
