Dear Friend,
Thanks to the generous support of donors like you, Humane Society International and our partners have been on the ground in Haiti for the past two weeks, providing critical care to the animal and human survivors of this tragedy.
Here are a few ways we've helped:
- Our teams have provided urgent and immediate care for wounded, diseased, dehydrated, and, in some cases, starving animals, including roaming street dogs, farm animals, working horses and donkeys, and animals in a Port-au-Prince zoo.
- We have supported the humanitarian relief work of other agencies. In one instance, we responded to a case where a hungry dog was getting into the trash heap at a children's hospital; our handlers were able to catch her, feed her, and find her a new home. In another, our veterinarian provided first stage care to a young woman with a fractured foot. Our team is also still sharing medical supplies and intelligence with doctors helping people affected by the earthquake.
- We have reunited a few pets with their families, including dogs Dieter and Bella, who survived Hurricane Katrina and this earthquake.
Now that the critical emergency response phase has ended, the members of our second on-the-ground team are heading home this morning.
Other HSI teams are likely to travel to Haiti in the weeks ahead to continue helping animals in need of immediate care. Meanwhile, our longer-term recovery plan working with our partners -- notably Veterinary Care and Human Services and Christian Veterinary Mission -- and the Haitian government is expected to include:
- Shipping and distributing food and supplies necessary to keep animals alive and healthy.
- Giving financial and practical support for Haiti's crucial rabies vaccination program.
- Providing ongoing direct animal care and treatment in Haiti.
- Setting up a rural spay/neuter program with Christian Veterinary Mission.
- Holding disaster preparedness training for Haitian veterinary personnel.
- Creating a basic animal care infrastructure or animal services clinic.
- Instituting a program to improve care for captive animals in zoos.
None of our efforts would be possible without your support. Thank you so much for the outpouring of kind words, offers of assistance, and donations. We have all been deeply moved by the images and stories we've seen from Haiti. Together, we will continue to make a real difference to help the survivors of this tragedy.
Sincerely,
Andrew Rowan President & CEO Humane Society International
