ZEBET 20th Anniversary
The German alternatives center, formally known as the National Centre for Documentation and Evaluation of Alternatives to Animal Experiments but better known by its German acronym "ZEBET," celebrated its 20th anniversary with a symposium held on October 26-27 at the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, in Berlin. Among national alternatives centers, ZEBET has an unparalleled track record of achievement in developing and/or validating non-animal testing methods. ZEBET's accomplishments in this regard include methods for skin irritation, -corrosion and -penetration, phototoxicity, acute toxicity, and embryotoxicity, among others.
ZEBET is also active in other areas. It has established the AnimAlt-ZEBET database, an important search tool for alternative methods. (The English language version is available free of charge at http://www.bfr.bund.de/cd/1508.) It operates advisory services on animal experimentation for public authorities, ministries, and scientists.
Dr. Horst Spielmann was the director of ZEBET from its start in 1989 through 2007. AltTox Forum users know Dr. Spielmann as a moderator of the Toxicity Endpoints & Tests Forum and frequent contributor to the various AltTox Forums. Other long-term ZEBET staff include Drs. Manfred Liebsch, Barbara Grune, and Andrea Seiler. Congratulations to the full staff of ZEBET for 20 years of accomplishment. A video and brochure commemorating ZEBET's work are available for viewing at http://www.bfr.bund.de/cd/30993 and http://www.bfr.bund.de/cd/30995, respectively.
