Three Rs Anniversaries
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of William Russell and Rex Burch's landmark book, The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique, which elaborated the Three Rs approach of replacing, reducing, and refining the use of animals in biomedical experimentation.
The anniversary will be celebrated at the upcoming World Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in the Life Sciences, to be held in Rome later this summer. For Russell, who died in 2006, the World Congress on Alternatives is a fitting venue for this tribute. Ten years ago, at the third World Congress, Russell delivered an entertaining lecture before an audience of several hundred conferees—arguably the highlight of his involvement with the scientists, animal protectionists, and others who had come to form the Three Rs community.
By happy coincidence, 2009 also marks another important anniversary in Three Rs history—the 40th year of the founding of FRAME (Fund for the Replacement of Animals in Medical Experiments). The British charity has done much over the years to promote alternative methods, including publishing the Three Rs community's flagship journal ATLA (Alternatives to Laboratory Animals). FRAME recently held a workshop in Notthingham, England, celebrating both anniversaries. During the workshop, two important announcements were made: FRAME has published an abridged version of The Principles, which has long been out of print, and the University of Nottingham will house and preserve Russell's voluminous papers and books.
