Dolphin Slaughter Beginning in Japan
The ocean will turn red with blood when Japanese fishermen begin their annual dolphin drive hunt today (as seen in the film "The Cove"). After herding the animals into shallow water, the men will choose a few of the most beautiful to sell for captive display. Then the slaughter will begin, with the dolphins calling to each other in fear and confusion as they try in vain to escape being stabbed to death. The meat of those killed will be used for pet food, fertilizer -- even human consumption despite the known danger of mercury contamination. Read more >>

EU Seal Trade Ban Takes Effect
On August 20th, the historic EU ban on seal product trade was scheduled to come into force. But just one day before, a limited, temporary suspension was announced, exempting a group of commercial and Inuit sealing interests for a few weeks pending a hearing. Thankfully, the ban otherwise remains in effect, removing a primary market for the global commercial sealing industry. And our legal arguments and allies are stronger than this attempt to circumvent the millions of Europeans, hundreds of Parliamentarians, and dozens of EU countries that made the ban a reality.
