Beachwood, NJ: Humane Solutions for Conflicts with Canada Geese - March 19, 2013
Jakes Branch County Park

The Humane Society of the United States has been working with the Ocean County Department of Parks & Recreation to implement a new, humane program for solving conflicts with Canada geese and we need your help!

In the past, Ocean County has contracted with the USDA's Wildlife Services to round up hundreds of geese and goslings each year and gas them to death. This method of attempting to address conflicts with geese is not only inhumane and cruel, but it doesn't work to solve conflicts with geese. This year, however, The HSUS is working with Ocean County to implement this humane pilot program for solving conflicts with geese.

The HSUS needs volunteers to assist in the addling of goose eggs in Ocean County. Addling is a humane method of controlling the population growth of Canada geese, and involves coating eggs with corn oil. It is our hope that a successful egg addling program this season will convince Ocean County that a roundup and killing program is not necessary this year. The time commitment for volunteering will be fairly small (a few hours a day for a few days from March through May).

If you're able to volunteer, please join us for a training workshop in humane solutions for solving conflicts with Canada geese! Contact Kathleen Schatzmann at kschatzmann@humanesociety.org if you have additional questions.
