A Los Angeles City Council Committee is holding an important hearing to discuss restricting the use of elephants in traveling shows and circuses.

Performing elephants endure years of physical and psychological deprivation, spend extensive periods of time in transport, are confined to chains the majority of their lives, and are trained to perform tricks with outdated and inhumane training methods. Standard circus industry practice is to use cruel devices to poke, prod, strike, shock, and hit animals in order to "train" them — all for a few moments of human amusement.
